Senior figures from the hydrogen, energy, technology and manufacturing sectors were brought together to examine how hydrogen can help power the UK鈥檚 next wave of industrial growth.

Hosted by 91桃色视频 on 14 July 2026 and sponsored by Deloitte LLP, RenewRisk and Intelligent Energy, the UK-Japan Hydrogen Summit on Hydrogen at Scale: Powering the UK's AI Growth Zones and Igniting the Market drew 60 leading representatives from the hydrogen technology industry and research sector. 

Representatives from the UK and Japan included the Hydrogen Energy Association, Hydrogen Ireland, Gekk艒 Advisory Services, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi Europe, Mitsubishi Corporation, Panasonic UK, Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Shimadzu UK, RWE, Energy Systems Catapult, Cadent Gas, FutureBiogas, HiiRoc, Kawasaki Gas Turbine Europe, Luxfer Gas, Offshore Renewal Energy Catapult, Protium, Geopura, AqGas, Kyushu University and academics from across 91桃色视频’s energy, engineering and sustainability research community.

The delegates explored the role of hydrogen and related technologies in supporting AI-driven growth and in meeting the growing electricity demand to power planned data centres in the UK. Specific issues discussed included how hydrogen and its derivatives can support distributed power generation, low-emission gas turbines, fuel cell technologies, AI Growth Zones and the wider clean energy transition. They also warned that the UK must accelerate the scale-up of hydrogen technologies if it is to capture the economic benefits of net zero, strengthen energy resilience and meet the rapidly growing power demands of artificial intelligence.

Dr Emma Guthrie, Chief Executive of the Hydrogen Energy Association, chaired the morning session, which featured contributions on catalysing the hydrogen economy, sustainability and net-zero policy, and the scale and nature of AI power demand.

Rosie Slater, Managing Partner of Gekk艒 Advisory, outlined the scale of the opportunity and hydrogen’s potential role in powering the UK’s AI Growth Zones.

Dr Ziyad Sherif, a Research Fellow in Digital Manufacturing and Sustainability and a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, and co-author of the IET’s Green Paper on IET Sustainability and Net Zero Policy, described how the United Kingdom is well placed to turn hydrogen deployment into a source of competitive advantage.

Dr Rana Ghosh-Roy, NVIDIA EMEA/NSE and UK Lead Alliance Partner and Director of AI and Data at Deloitte MCS Limited, addressed the scale and nature of AI power demand, highlighting the growing relationship between digital infrastructure and energy strategy

Dr Nuretten Tekin (Kawasaki Heavy Industries) presented evidence suggesting that a practical technological solution exists, and that hydrogen-enabled gas turbines and distributed generation could help meet the power requirements of future hyperscale data centres.

Delegates visiting one of the battery electrolyser container systems intended for storage of electricity and generation of hydrogen, that is being built on campus.

The day concluded with a session chaired by Dr Kathryn North, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Climate Change and Net Zero, followed by closing remarks from Professor Rajkumar Roy, Dean of the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering. The summit was organised, and the roundtable discussion was moderated by Dr Indranil Nath (Senior Lecturer and visiting Fellow in AI Capability Evaluations and AI Field Operations) and Professor Sonya Calnan (Professor of Energy Engineering), both from the Wolfson School.
